שְׁכִינָה
shchinah
Religious / SynagogueMeaningThe idea that God is living or resting in a certain place or with certain people.
HistoryThis word comes from the root ש.כ.נ, which means "to live in a place". In the Bible, the special tent where God was said to live was called the "Mishkan" from this same root. The word "Shekhinah" itself was first used by wise teachers after the Bible was written to talk about the way God is present in our world.
Many people feel God's presence at the Western Wall.
